THE oldest gig crew in Cornwall took part in their annual fancy dress fundraiser in Newquay on New Year’s Day.
The Lady Jane Geriatrics gig team from Newquay Rowing Club dressed up as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in aid of Children’s Hospice South West.
The group visited the Central Inn, Sailors and Newquay Rowing Club to raise money, which so far amounts to £2,300.
The Lady Jane Geriatrics gig team is traditionally the last crew at Newquay Rowing Club to go out for a row in the year and the first team to row in the new year as part of the fundraiser. But for the first time in 10 years the team was unable to go out as the conditions were too rough.
The Lady Jane Geriatrics gig crew raise money for Children’s Hospice South West throughout the year.
A fundraising auction is held in November and the crew also take part in the Children’s Hospice South West gig race at Newquay Harbour.
Organiser Don Ellis said: “My late wife Jane passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2014. She loved to row so we bought a gig for the club called the Lady Jane and ever since we have dressed up in different fancy dress to raise money for the children’s hospice.
“It’s a bit of a laugh. We are a bunch of like-minded idiots, and they were all good friends with Jane.
“The oldest member of the crew is aged 82 and the youngest is 43. Most of us are in our sixties and seventies.
“We had a cracking afternoon raising money. We went into various pubs and shops and were well received wherever we went. People know us by now as we do the fancy dress fundraiser every year.
“Start & Co sponsor our racing shirts . They have been fantastic for us.”
