A recent afternoon gathering of one of the Oddfellows Friendship Groups which meets in Redruth found members agreeing to use funds raised from prize raffles during the year to adopt a donkey being cared for at the Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary at Mabe Burnthouse near Penryn.
Some members of the group, known for historical reasons as the ‘Falmouth Friendship Group’, had recently visited the sanctuary and saw first-hand the wonderful work being done to rescue the animals from misery and cruelty reading about one in particular called ‘Amos’ who been saved from a live animal market back in 2019 when he was in a very poor condition.
It was enthusiastically agreed to adopt Amos and within minutes, an on-line payment was made to the sanctuary.
The afternoon then continued with a competitive and sometimes noisy game of card bingo, always a popular pastime, together with a members’ benefits update from one of the Oddfellows District welfare representatives and a prize raffle.
Teas, coffees, a wide selection of biscuits, fruit and sweets were served and take home puzzle sheets distributed as well as free books.
The decision to ‘adopt a donkey’ follows on the heels of a number of charitable donations made by local Oddfellows down recent months which has included assistance rendered to a local homeless charity, support for a local canine charity, gifts of chocolates and biscuits to a hospice and entertainment at a local hospital.
