Penzance Council have announced that nominations for the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards 2024 are now open.  

The council are looking for people who might know that special someone who makes a real difference in their local area to celebrate those have gone the extra mile in the last twelve months. 

The awards were started in 2003 by the late Brian Spiegelhalter (previous mayor of Penzance) of B J Spiegelhalter & Son to celebrate the work of local people and their important contributions to our Parish community.

Brian’s son Mark said: “Named in memory of my late father, Brian Spiegelhalter, a beloved figure renowned for his unwavering commitment to community service during his time as mayor and on the Penzance Town Council. These awards aim to celebrate and perpetuate his legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to others.” 

Penzance Council are looking for nominations for the following awards for both the Citizen of the Year (aged 18 and over) and the Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 18). Nominations can be made by anyone living, working or studying in the Parish of Penzance for a wide range of activities. 

Cllr Stephen Reynolds, mayor of Penzance, said: “These awards are an opportunity for two of these community heroes to share the limelight at the Annual Mayor Choosing Ceremony, while also highlighting the invaluable contribution of volunteers to community life in the Penzance parish.” 

Nominations can be made online or hard-copy forms are available at the Penzance council offices. Closing date for nominations is noon on Tuesday, April 9. 

Once chosen, the winners will be invited to the annual town council meeting on Tuesday, May 7, at St John's Hall, Penzance and will be presented with their awards by the Town Mayor. 

The winners will also be invited to the mayor’s reception at The Exchange Gallery, Penzance which will take place immediately after the ceremony.
