A popular music venue and bar is set to have its licence reviewed this week following repeated complaints about noise and disturbance. Cornwall Council’s environmental protection team has called for the review of Bunters Bar in Truro which will be considered by the council’s licensing committee.
Documents going before councillors explain that there had been complaints about loud music late on Friday nights and disturbing people living nearby. It says that between August 2021 and July 2022 live music would regularly carry on until 11.30pm and sometimes to midnight.
Council officers discussed the issue with the licensee, Jason Masters, and it was agreed that live music would no longer continue after 11pm. However, complaints have continued to be received about the level of noise from live music between 9pm and 11pm which was “causing significant disturbance”.
Environmental protection officers said: “Given the close proximity of Bunters to nearby residential premises it is important that noise levels are adequately controlled to prevent unreasonable noise and disturbance."
They have recommended that no live music or recorded music should be allowed after 11pm on any day of the week. They also request that the licensee employs an acoustic consultant to ensure that noise is controlled so it does not disturb people living nearby.
Furthermore they have suggested that the outdoor smoking area should be closed from 11pm Sunday to Thursday and at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. However drinks should not be allowed to be taken outside after 10.30pm during the week and 11pm at weekends.
Additionally the officers have also asked for a condition to be placed on the licence so that no glass is emptied into recycling bins between 8pm and 8am on any day.
Cornwall Council’s licensing act sub-committee will meet online to consider the review tomorrow, Wednesday February 1, at 10am.
