A Newquay woman is embarking on a charity trek to raise money for a cause close to her heart.

Sophie Campkin is taking part in a five-day hike to the Indian Himalayas on November 9 in aid of CoppaFeel, which aims to stamp out the late diagnosis of breast cancer.

The fundraiser is the latest trek she is taking part in to raise money and awareness for the charity that her late friend Kris Hallenga from Newquay established after being diagnosed with secondary breast cancer at the age of 23.

She will be joining a number of famous faces on the expedition including blogger Giovanna Fletcher.

Sophie has previously taken part in treks to the French Alps in September and in Yorkshire in May for the cause.

She also took part in two treks with her friends closer to home this year, which included walking the coastal path from Padstow to Newquay as well as from Looe to Rame Head.

Sophie said: “This November, I will set out on a challenging, extraordinary and life-changing trek, all in the name of checking chests.

“I am fundraising to support CoppaFeel as it is very close to my heart. My best friends Kris and her sister Maren Hallenga set up the charity 15 years ago when Kris was diagnosed with breast cancer, after a number of doctors visits, sadly meaning the cancer was able to spread around her body.

“She received the Pride of Britain award later that year for all the work she had done in her campaigning to promote early detection of the disease in young people.

“People’s donations will not only support my fundraising target, but most importantly CoppaFeel. They are on a mission to stamp out the late diagnosis of breast cancer by making sure that young people are regularly checking their boobs, pecs and chests and getting to know their bodies in order to have the confidence to see their GP if something just doesn't feel normal.”

A fundraiser is being held to contribute towards her final pots of funds where people will have an opportunity to make a boob pot. Tor Pottery Works in Tor Road is hosting the event at the Sink Inn in Beach Road on Sunday, October 13 from 6pm onwards.

A spokesperson said: “The workshop will guide people along making their pinch pot out of a ball of smooth white clay.

“Once this step is complete, they will have some extra clay to design their boobs, attaching the perky pair to complete the look.

“All pots will be taken back to the studio for finishing. Tickets are still available to attend and people can also buy raffle tickets.”
