NEWQUAY Town Council has awarded funds totalling £4,500 to causes as part of its grants scheme.

Newquay Hockey Club, Cornwall Pride Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association (DaCCWA) have received the funding in the first round of its Community Grant Scheme for 2024.

Newquay Hockey Club has been donated £1,750 to support the club’s growth and the development of its coaches.

The funding will enable the club to take the first steps in bringing hockey back to Newquay by offering sessions for children aged five and up, led by trained and qualified coaches.

The club plans to establish a new men’s team, provide more equipment such as goalkeeper kits and sticks for both juniors and seniors, and offer opportunities for everyone to try hockey without the need to purchase equipment upfront. Cornwall Pride received £2,000 to support the Newquay Pride 2024 event, a one-day celebration which took place at the Killacourt with a procession through Newquay, live acts, and a focus on promoting diversity and inclusion. The grant will help ensure the yearly event remains a vibrant and unifying celebration for all.

Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association has been awarded £750 to further its Feel Safe Scheme in Newquay, an initiative that helps residents feel safer in their homes.

The scheme, which operates on a referral-only basis, offers free security enhancements such as CCTV installation, padlocks, and garden improvements, all carried out by insurance-approved contractors.

Councillor Liz Wright, the chair of Newquay Town Council's community and tourism committee, said: "We are thrilled to support these organisations through our Community Grant Gateway.

"Each of these groups plays a crucial role in contributing to the social and cultural fabric of our town. “We look forward to seeing the positive impact of these grants on their respective initiatives."

The Community Grant Gateway is an initiative by Newquay Town Council designed to provide financial support to local non-profit organisations and community groups. The scheme aims to empower these organisations to carry out projects and activities that benefit the community, promote engagement, and enhance the quality of life in Newquay. Grants are awarded based on the potential impact of the proposed projects and their alignment with the Council's strategic objectives.

The second round of the 2024 Newquay Town Council Community Grant Scheme is now open for applications. Local non-profit organisations are encouraged to apply for funding to support their projects and initiatives.

Applications will be evaluated on their potential to deliver positive outcomes for Newquay’s residents and visitors.

Applications can be submitted until September 30 by visiting our website at https://www.newquay.gov.uk
