A Newquay school that has banned girls from wearing skirts has launched a scheme to recycle the garments.

The Newquay Tretherras Eco Team plans to transform donated skirts into bags, accessories and embroidered items.

The items will be sold to raise funds for local food banks and women’s refuges.

Newquay Tretherras is banning girls from wearing skirts from the start of the new school year in September following concerns they have been wearing them too short.

The Eco Team said: “Due to changes in uniform we would like to recycle as many school skirts as possible. By recycling we will protect our environment because less items will go to landfill.

“There are a few things we’d like to do with your donated skirts and have used some of the feedback from the parental consultation including upcycle the skirts into bags, accessories and embroidered items that will be sold to raise funds for local food banks; donate to women’s refuges; recycle, using Recycling Clothes Banks.

“Please also put in there any current uniform that has been outgrown, as we can look to use this to support other families.”

School skirts can be dropped off at the black recycling wheelie bin located at the front of the Quay building.
