Chase & Status got the festival off to a bang getting the crowd pumped with their high energy drum ‘n’ bass set.

Sam Fender warmed the crowd with a powerful headline performance on Saturday night. He was joined on stage by superfan Byron who was plucked from the crowd to play acoustic guitar.

Stormzy also pulled in a huge crowd to end the festival. Fans sang along to some of his biggest hits.

Other acts included Becky Hill, Leftfield, Nia Archives, Tom O’Dell, Bakar, Soft Play, Katy B, The Teskey Brothers, Kenya Grace, Say She She, Gok Wan and Songer.

Among the local acts performing were Newquay teenage band the Newqs. They pulled in a “great” crowd at the Keg and Pasty tent.

The lead singer, Rosie, is at Tretherras, Elodie on bass and Jago on drums are at Treviglas and Bill, guitar is at Truro college. The Steelers from Treviglas Academy also performed.

Seven people were injured when the crowd collapsed twice at the Point Stage ahead of DJ Sammy Virji’s performance, which was cancelled as a safety precaution.

A Boardmasters spokesperson said: “Following a crowd collapse at The Point seven attendees were transferred to hospital nearby for precautionary examination after presenting to our medical team.

“They have been treated for minor injuries and have all since been discharged.”

Boardmasters is estimated to bring a £40million boost to the local economy but Newquay BID manager Mark Warren said “unfortunately” he had more businesses this year saying they were negatively impacted than positively.

Mr Warren said: “The cafes, restaurants, ice creams, supermarkets most were happy, but the business say that the normal family shopper and couples stayed away so they were impacted.

“We are working with Boardmasters to reduce shuttle bus costs, but it would be good to have more Newquay businesses represented at Fistral in the cabins and at the music festival .as these were predominately outsiders.

“We need to continue working with Boardmasters to find solutions to support local businesses through the festival and I have asked for a meeting with Vision 9 at their earliest convenience.

“We will also be sending out a survey as we did last year asking for feedback both positive and negative to bring to the Boardmasters team at this meeting.

A new traffic management system was put in place, which largely prevented congestion in Newquay but there were long traffic queues along the A392 as people arrived at the festival site on Wednesday.

Fistral Beach experienced large crowds of people who visited to watch the surfing action. Lukas Skinner, aged 16, from Perranporth took first place in the Junior Open and BYD Pro shortboard finals.

Lauren Sandland from Crantock, aged 18, won the final in the girls Junior Open contest. French surfers also dominated the top spots at Boardmasters, with 13-year-old Tya Zebrowski winning the BYD Pro women's open title.

Edouard Delpero won the Wild West Jerky Longboard Pro men’s contest and Alice Lemoigne won the women's division.

A clear-up operation is now underway to ensure all the camping gear and rubbish is removed from the festival site.
