A Newquay fish and chip shop was evacuated after a fire broke out on Wednesday night.
Francines Fish & Chip Shop in Chester Road managed to get staff and customers out of the building after a blaze started in the extraction system at about 7pm.
Green Watch manager Dominic Walford scrambled the fire service to attend moments after the fire started when he noticed smoke billowing out of the front of the building whilst driving past on the way home from work.
He evacuated residents from flats above the fish and chip shop and gathered information to pass on to the responding fire crews when they arrived.
Two appliances from Newquay Fire Station and one from St Columb Major Fire Station attended the incident and their quick response prevented the fire from spreading into the building and causing more severe damage.
Dominic said: “There was a fire in the extraction system.
“I was literally driving past home after my shift when I saw smoke coming out of the front door so I phoned fire control.
“The fish and chip shop was fully evacuated.
“The on call crews at Newquay Fire Station were doing a training night and responded quickly.
“They managed to stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the building.
“Before they arrived I made sure the flats upstairs were fully evacuated.
“The fire crews were on scene within five minutes of the call and when they arrived I handed the incident over to Ashley Mann who was in charge.
“The gas was isolated and the firefighters put out the fire using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets.
“The fire was only in the extraction system and did not get into the building so hopefully Francines will be up and running again soon.”
A spokesperson for Francines Fish & Chip Shop said: “We will be closed until further notice due to a fire on our frying range.
“All the staff and customers are okay.
“We apologise for this inconvenience, and we will keep everyone updated about when we reopen.”
