THE MP for St Austell and Newquay is inviting high street and small businesses in Newquay to attend a tourism summit to help defy challenges within the sector and boost trade.

The event on June 6 will focus on two main topics — driving local insight into the government’s tourism growth strategy and working to develop ‘Brand Newquay’.

MP Noah Law is inviting high street and SMEs businesses, as well as relevant organisations, to come and have their say to help Newquay fulfil its potential.

He said: “During my election campaign, I pledged to work to revitalise our towns, and in Newquay, the tourism industry is central to achieving that goal.

“It's vital that we work to ensure that the tourism industry is as all-year-round as possible, provides careers not just jobs, and tackles some of the structural challenges around the cost of holidaying in Cornwall.

“As it stands, the sector is grappling with seasonality, lack of infrastructure, and challenges hiring the right people. But let’s remember that Newquay is a jewel in the crown of Cornwall – voted as one of the nation’s favourite seaside towns, and with its very own airport and direct rail links – let’s keep the momentum.”

Statistics show big fluctuations in visitor numbers to Newquay and Cornwall over the last decade.

Mr Law said 2024 was the "flattest year" in his experience, citing factors such as poor weather, the general election, and cost-of-living pressures, but the MP has said there is now room for optimism.

The government has set an ambition for visitor numbers to the UK to reach 50-million by 2030, and said it will establish a new Visitor Economy Advisory Council to work with industry on tourism and design and deliver a new growth strategy – which it plans to publish later this year.
