A Newquay book shop is taking part in a celebration to mark the vital role they play in the community.

Clemo Books in Bank Street, which opened in November, is preparing to mark its first Independent Bookshop Week between June 15 and 22 after being a pop up business for two years.

A line up of activities includes an author visit, a late-night shopping event and a young people’s poetry competition to get the community engaged with their local bookshop.

Clemo Books owner and bookseller Jaimie Poyner said: “Our first Independent Bookshop Week on the high street feels like quite a sentimental milestone.

“We’re so pleased to be part of the national campaign which champions the importance of bookshops on the high street, highlighting the vibrancy and cultural opportunities they can bring to towns and their communities.

“The bunting is going up and we hope people get involved with Clemo Books during our first Independent Bookshop Week.”

Among the celebrations book worms can meet Tracey Williams, author of much acclaimed Adrift: The Curious Tale of The Lego Lost at Sea, who will be signing copies of her book and trying out bookselling for herself on Saturday, June, 15 between 10.30am until 12.30pm.

Children and young people will also be able to join in with the celebrations and take part in the Clemo Books Young People’s Poetry Competition.

Inspired by visiting author Tracey Williams’ beachcombing habits, the brief for the poetry competition is ‘found’ and youngsters have the chance to win gift vouchers. The winning poem will be displayed in the book shop window for people in Newquay to read.

Local writer and poet Lucy Beckley and author Tracey Williams will be judging the poetry competition alongside bookseller Jaimie Poyner. The competition is open for entries now and closes midday on Saturday, June 22. Information about the competition can be found on the Clemo Books website.

The bookshop will also be staying open for longer with a special late night shopping event to mark the celebratory week on Saturday, June 15. Bubbly will be served with every book purchased as a way of thanking customers for their support.
