A new Truro women’s football team staged its inaugural tournament on October 19.

Truro Bluebirds Football Club’s first seven-a-side football tournament for women over 35 was played out under beautiful blue autumnal skies in the city.

More than 70 players - in teams from Redruth, Camborne, Troon, Goonhavern and two sides from Mylor - joined the Truronians in closely-fought contests.

The tournament was won by the strong, well-organised Redruth Antiques team who were undefeated across their six games.

A total of £400 was raised on the day, to be split equally between Truro City Youth Football Club and charity Heart Heroes, supporting people with lifelong heart conditions.

Event organiser Lisa Marley from Truro Bluebirds FC said: “I had no idea what to expect when I first advertised the tournament. To have seven teams take part was fantastic.

“The atmosphere was very friendly, with players switching teams to cover for injuries and to ensure that everyone got as much football as possible.

“Well done to the winners and thanks to everyone who took part and helped on the day. We’ve already had lots of requests for this event to be run again - let’s hope it’s the first of many.”

The newly formed Truro Bluebirds FC has evolved from a friendly charity fundraiser match with mums and carers of children who play for Truro City Youth FC. After a successful sequel, the group was bitten by the football bug.

“Everyone who got involved found they enjoyed switching from watching their children on the sidelines to being out on the pitch playing,” said Lisa. “Some had played before and are returning to the sport, but most have been giving it a go for the first time.

“Women’s football is growing rapidly, and we Truro Bluebirds are fully embracing the opportunity to improve our fitness, learn new skills, make new friends and enjoy the social benefits of the game.”

A new league for ladies over 35 in Cornwall is on the cards.
