A NEW free street art walking trail celebrating Newquay’s rich heritage and identity has gone live.
QR codes have been installed at the large-scale murals situated at The Crescent, Sydney Road and on East Street as part of the MUQY Street Art Trail, which contain information on the artist and the design.
People will find the first mural, an abstract beach scene in East Street, which was created by Kleiner Shames and draws inspiration from Newquay’s stunning coastline.
Young people from the local community worked with Kleiner at a workshop hosted by Youth Art Connect to design an abstract scene.
People can encounter the second mural painted by Elle Koziupa on Sydney Road, which features an iconic fisherman tending to his nets.
The mural draws inspiration from Newquay’s historic fishing industry. Elle was inspired by photographs from the Newquay Museum and Archive and wanted to create something that reflects the town’s deep historical ties to its fishing trade.
People can discover the third mural, an illustrative and playful design from 45 RPM, on The Crescent.
The mural draws inspiration from the Newquay Girls Guide, who as part of a workshop, shared what Newquay means to them. The mural features elements like surfing, palm trees, crabs, fishing nets, and camping.
Experience Newquay funded the project, spearheaded by Jack Tierney from Slapdash Studio and Dirk Parker, a BID board member, active Newquay Town Team member and local business owner.
Together, they identified the opportunity to use street art to communicate Newquay’s unique heritage and identity and improve the high street.
A spokesperson for the MUQY Street Art Trail said: “Explore the vibrant world of street art right in the heart of Newquay.
“Discover MUQY, a free walking trail around the town centre and uncover stunning pockets of creativity.
“There will be more murals to come in 2025.”
