ST Austell and the Clay Country has a Labour MP for the first time following the remarkable results in the General Election.

Sir Kier Starmer’s landslide victory across the country saw four Labour MPs elected in Cornwall, with Noah Law winning in the St Austell and Newquay constituency.

Mr Law, an economic development professional, grew up in Lostwithiel, went to school in the constituency at Fowey, and completed a degree at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus.

He gained masters degrees in economic history from Cambridge University and in business administration from Oxford University and earned the chartered financial analyst designation.

He has worked in the UK and abroad, and is multi-lingual, speaking Finnish, French and German.

On Saturday, Mr Law posted on X (formerly Twitter): “A moment’s breather to celebrate and thank some of our volunteers, friends and supporters. On with the hard work ahead from tomorrow. I appreciate everyone’s patience while we set up the office.”

Mr Law overcame the 16,526 majority that Conservative Steve Double gained at the General Election in 2019.

He received 15,958 votes while Mr Double had a total of 13,488 - a 17.11 per cent swing from the Conservatives to Labour.

Reform UK candidate Stephen Beal came third with 9,212, taking votes that might previously have gone to the Tories. Liberal Democrat Joanna Kenny came in fourth with 4,805 votes.

The Green Party’s Amanda Pennington received 2,337 votes, the Liberal Party’s Jay Latham gained 490 and Independent Angie Rayner 442. The turnout was 61.38 per cent.

In the neighbouring South East Cornwall constituency, longstanding Conservative MP Sheryll Murray lost her seat to Labour’s Anna Gelderd.

The Labour candidate won with 15,670 votes while Mrs Murray received 13,759. Reform’s Paul Wadley gained 9,311 and Liberal Democrat candidate Colin Martin came fourth with 8,288.

Meanwhile, in the North Cornwall constituency, Liberal Democrat Ben Maguire, with 24,904 votes, beat the sitting Conservative MP and former postman Scott Mann who received 14,137.
