THE new mayor of St Austell, Cllr Julian Young, has outlined his hopes for his forthcoming year in office.
At the top of the list is tackling anti-social behaviour in the town.
Cllr Young told the Voice: “Over the course of the coming year as a town council we expect to increase our CCTV coverage and increase the hours of town security guards.”
Highlighting other priorities, Cllr Young said: “We want to encourage increased footfall in the town centre by actively supporting local businesses where we can, learning from other community programmes at home and abroad.
“We are also aiming for increased inclusion. The recent St Austell Pride day emphasised the vibrant diverse community that the town embraces. We will explore opportunities to hear the voices of all community groups, to promote community growth and inclusive practices, and celebrate diversity.
“In addition, the council will work closely with Cornwall Council to actively promote opportunities for collaboration with other local communities to support shared understanding and effective deployment of funding. We will work with local schools to explore ways to promote community identity and environmental awareness and use this knowledge to implement change.
“Regarding charitable work, I will be raising funds for and awareness of Kernow Young Carers and the blue light services.”
A town council spokesperson said of the new mayor: “Councillor Young joined us in 2021 in the last round of elections and is a town councillor for the Central and Gover Ward. He was elected deputy mayor last year and very ably supported Councillor Crystal Pearce during her year as mayor. Councillor Young is also vice-chair of our finance and general purposes committee.”
Cllr Young, talking about his family life, said: “I recently married my wife, Jenny, the wedding being a joyful opportunity to bring our two families together for a celebratory weekend at Porthpean House.
“When we are not busy with work and family commitments, Jen and I like to walk, swim, read and support local theatre and the arts.”
