Newquay has cemented itself as the “home of boardriding” in the UK following the launch of the £120,000 expansion of its popular skatepark.

The new area at Concrete Waves has been specifically designed for beginners of all ages to learn, develop, and hone their skills before venturing into the more challenging aspects of the park.

The extension, which has been designed by Maverick Industries, boasts cutting-edge ramps, rails, and obstacles, as well as an acoustic wall to reduce noise for residents living nearby.

The expansion is a joint effort by Newquay Town Council, which owns the skatepark, along with the Boardmasters Foundation and Cornwall Council.

The Boardmasters Foundation and Cornwall Council's Community Infrastructure Levy has provided £50,000 apiece for the project and any outstanding balance needed has come directly from town council funds.

Riders keen to be one of the first to ride the extension gathered at the unveiling on Tuesday, March 19.

“With the addition of its latest extension, the park solidifies its position as a premier destination for skateboarding and extreme sports.”

Cllr Andy Hannan, the chairman of the environment and facilities committee, which oversees the skatepark, said: “When we first opened Concrete Waves to the public it was always our vision to expand the facility and today, we are witnessing the delivery of that vision.

“Massive thanks to Mavericks for all their hard work and dedication, to the Boardmasters Foundation for their financial support, and to all the town council officers and fellow councillors for sticking with and delivering our vision.

“Can’t wait to see it in full use throughout the coming months. Looking at the new section, I’m tempted to have go myself.”

Deputy mayor Cllr Drew Creek added: “So pleased to see the Concrete Waves expansion opening ahead of time.

“Thanks to all councillors and Newquay Town Council staff who made this happen and Maverick Skateparks for building it for our town.

“Huge thank you to Boardmasters for the foundations donation to help pay for the build.

Great cross party working on this one for the benefit of Newquay.

“Concrete Waves is the biggest and best skatepark in the UK and the expansion secures Newquay as the home of board-riding.”
