NEW colourful murals are set to be created in Newquay town centre throughout the year to help attract visitors.

Newquay BID is delivering an expanded MUQY Street Art Walking Trail after securing funding through Cornwall Council's Town Delivery Fund, which aims to help revitalise town centres.

Jack Tierney from Slapdash Studio, who is helping to produce the project, is in discussion with various building owners who are keen to help brighten up their premises and the town.

A fourth mural of over-sized beach balls is being created on the wall of the Unity building on Gover Lane by renowned large-scale mural artist and designer, Josephine Hicks aka Hixxy.

Best known for her dynamic murals, often referred to as ‘Left Field Tutti-Fruity’ in appearance, Hixxy has an impressive portfolio, including collaborations with major brands like Clarks and Bombay Sapphire.

The vibrant, surrealist design, which is set to be completed on Saturday, will be a creative depiction of local stories and themes.

The ‘town to beach’ design aims to portray how the Newquay population explodes during the peak holiday season.

The bouncing beach balls will symbolise holidaymakers arriving in the town and making their way down the hill to the beach.

The unique visual style will also depict how residents and the town copes with the ebb and flow of the visitor influx both positively and negatively but will also leave audiences with space to form their own narratives.

The mural will feature elements such as RNLI lifeguards, hospitality workers, dogwalkers and traffic wardens, all brought to life with a unique, larger-than-life, bright and bouncy style and aesthetic.

The vibrant artwork will form part of the free street art walking trail celebrating Newquay’s unique heritage and identity.

The first mural unveiled was an abstract beach scheme created by Cornwall-based artist Kleiner Shames at MIX NQY in East Street.

The second artwork features a fisherman tending to his nets at the junction of Fore Street and Sydney Road, which was created by Elle Koziupa.

Artist 45 RPM created the third mural, an illustrative and playful design on the back of The Walkabout at The Crescent.

Mark Warren, the manager of Newquay BID, said: “We are often asked when the next mural is coming to town, so we are so excited to officially announce and confirm its arrival.

“The previous murals generated a palpable buzz, and we anticipate this will do the same.

“We don’t want to give too much away, but we can say it will be a striking piece that speaks to the locals, whilst providing a fun and colourful lift to the street.

“Just like the others, it will be thought provoking with depth and place-specific meaning.

“We have exciting plans for MUQY, with more sites set to launch in 2025, and we look forward to continuing to build on this legacy.

“More detail on this will be revealed in the near future.”

The initial concept, developed by BID board member Dirk Parker and Mr Tiernay, was initially made possible with funding from Experience Newquay.
