A NEW choir for those living with and alongside dementia has been launched in St Austell.
The Forget-me-not Chorus (FMNC), which meets at Mount Charles Methodist Church, is the first of its type to be started outside of Wales.
The FMNC charity has used the power of shared song to reach thousands of people impacted by dementia in Wales since 2010.
The charity has also reached staff and residents at six Cornish care homes since 2021, this leading to the launch of the new community chorus.
The choir is being led by St Agnes-based professional soprano Caroline Childe, with the sessions aiming to energise, engage and empower those with dementia, and those who love and care for them.
The sessions are free to attend and run on alternate Saturdays from 2pm to 4pm at the church in Victoria Road. The next session will be held on August 31.
The charity says: “So much more than simply singing old songs, it’s about creating new memories, enjoying new experiences and celebrating life in the moment.
“We have worked with memory cafes and other local organisations to raise awareness of this new community service, and welcome local volunteer ‘Singing Buddies’ who give their time to support, encourage and build community through the experience of singing together.
“Described as ‘a spa for the soul’, Forget-me-not Chorus supports those living with and alongside dementia through the power of song. Inclusive singing sessions in community, care home, hospital and online settings empower participants to use and share their creative voice, stimulating pride, educating others and challenging stigma.
“Over 13 years’ experience has taken FMNC from one Cardiff-based pilot choir to an innovative, pioneering service now accessed across the UK and beyond.”
One volunteer said: “I’m delighted that Forget-me-not Chorus is being held in St. Austell. It gives us all a joyous afternoon. We go home feeling so much better.”
The chorus members are inviting the wider community to join them at a sharing session for friends and family on Saturday, September 14, from 2pm. No tickets are required.
