The fallen of the First and Second World Wars, and other conflicts, were remembered in poignant ceremonies and services across South East Cornwall at the weekend.

Events took place on Saturday, which was Armistice Day, and on Remembrance Sunday.

A special presentation also took place in Saltash on Armistice Day when the town’s mayor, Cllr Richard Bickford, accompanied by mayoress Sarah Bickford and deputy mayor Cllr Julia Peggs, received the first copy of the Saltash At War booklet.

The booklet was conceived by a member of the Saltash Great War Commemorative Events Committee, Barry Brooking, the son of  former mayor Alfred Brooking.

Barry had proposed a Saltash at War trail leaflet. The committee was considering this idea when David Orton, the Saltash Library hub manager, asked the group whether they could make a presentation on this subject at the library in May for National Community History month.

As a result, the Saltash At War group delivered an illustrated lecture on May 25 to a packed audience.

Barry had researched and written the script  and Lynn Marsh prepared and inserted the illustrations that were supplied mainly by Saltash Heritage and John and Sue Hooper.

A member of the audience asked if a booklet could be produced from the information used for the presentation which covered 2,000 years.

The group followed this up and was able to afford a small print run from the Saltash Great War Commemorative Events ‘wind up’ funds.

The publication is free but limited copies are available.

A spokesperson for the group said: “It is hoped that in the future, Saltash Town Council might consider having more copies printed as a tribute to Saltash in wartime, and as a service to the Saltash at War Committee.”

The booklet is produced in a concise and easy-to-read form with historic photographs and illustrations mainly in full colour.

In the meantime, the Saltash At War group continues to present illustrated lectures to the local community, with the next event taking place at Saltash Library on Saturday at 11am.
