A £700 grant from Cornwall Council leader Linda Taylor’s community chest has enabled NCI St Ives to carry out essential repairs to their Davis weather station which monitors conditions in the bay.
Councillor Taylor, who represents St Ives, visited the National Coastwatch Institution’s lookout station on The Island and said: “I’m very pleased to have been able to support NCI St Ives. I’m a follower of their Facebook page and when I saw they were seeking funding for the repairs I thought I can help here.”
The landmark NCI Station at St Ives celebrated 25 years of providing eyes along the coast to keep people safe earlier this year.
Councillor Taylor, who met station manager Trevor Peake and Helen Simpson, the former manager who is now the NCI’s regional trustee for Cornwall, added: “I admire the great work the volunteers do. It’s a big commitment they all make to help keep people safe around our coast.”
The NCI St Ives has around 50 volunteer watchkeepers manning the station 365 days a year to monitor sea-users and those around the coast, informing and assisting Falmouth Coastguard if anyone is spotted getting into difficulty.
