The National Trust is calling for volunteers to help share the remarkable story of Cornish Mining.

They are looking for people to lend at hand at East Pool Mine and Levant Mine and Beam Engine.

East Pool Mine sits in the heart of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and features Taylor’s Engine House that holds a beam engine originally powered by high-pressure steam boilers introduced by local engineer Richard Trevithick. It is a reminder of Cornwall’s days as a world-famous centre of industry, engineering and innovation.

Levant Mine and Beam Engine sit on the cliffs of the wild Tin Coast, near the mining town of St Just.

One of the ‘mines under the sea’, Levant’s is a story of industry and tragedy and is home to the only winding beam engine in steam, still in its original engine house.

The team at Levant are looking for volunteer tour guides and engine drivers to tell the story of the site from its heyday to the tragedy that led to its closure.

James Breslin, visitor operations and experiences manager for the National Trust Mining Sites in West Cornwall said: “The special places we care for at East Pool Mine and Levant hold an  important place in the hearts of the community that live around them as well as being loved by those with an interest in Cornish heritage.

“These are places of international significance and we’re keen that the teams sharing this remarkable heritage truly represent the diverse communities they serve.”

A spokesperson for East Pool Mine added: “Whether you’re interested in Cornish history, engineering or just want to try something new, we would love to hear from you.

“You don’t need any special skills, a smile and enthusiasm will be plenty to get you started, but any previous skills and experience will be put to good use.”
