THE mystical Zorba reef at Fistral Beach was surfed for the first time ever on Tuesday (February 18).

Rob Fowlie from St Agnes surfed a massive 25 foot wave at the spot off Pentire Headland, which is also known as Shrub Street.

The historic moment in British surfing was achieved through a team effort.

Will Milne pulled Rob into the wave on a jetski whilst Nick Tiscoe was riding another jetski to provide water safety.

Rob said: “It was an incredible experience.

“We have been waiting for a decade for the right conditions to come together to have a go at riding Zorba.

“It was a huge 20 foot swell with a period of 17 seconds with a south easterly wind and a super low tide so that’s all the stars aligning.

“It was something special.

“The hardest part was driving past the Cribbar as that was pumping.

“Then we had to wait for a wave to come in at Zorba and jump on it.

“I only got the one wave as they were not breaking regularly.

“It is a hard one to judge how big the wave was as people judge wave heights differently but I would say it was about 25 foot high.

“We went out on a training session two days before in order to take on the Zorba.

“We are a serious outfit who do a lot of training.

“We mean business when we go for it.”

Photographer Geoff Tydeman, who captured the image, said: “Finally Zorba has been ridden.

“I'm guessing it is Rob Fowlie but I was shooting from Cribbar headland so it is about two kilometres from me.

“I'm surprised I could get a reasonably clear shot with all the misty spray in the air.”

Rob managed to catch a wave at the nearby Cribbar reef after his exploits at the Zorba.
