THE MP for St Ives has expressed his disappointment that the operators of a new fast ferry between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly is ceasing operations.

Andrew George plans to ask ministers to get around the table and to take a fresh look at the Scillies sea link following Harland & Wolff’s decision to scrap Scilly Ferries before its maiden voyage.

He said: “This is very disappointing news. Harland and Wolff's previous commitment to run a passenger service to the Scillies had been welcomed by many, including me.

“I’ve communicated this morning with H&W and the council. I’ll be raising questions with transport and business ministers.

“Above all, we must learn lessons from recent episodes, including the failure to utilise available public investment to secure the future sustainability of an affordable sea-link to the islands. I hope the new government will offer a new approach. I'll ask ministers to get around the table and to take a fresh look at the Scillies sea link.”

Shipbuilder Harland & Wolff says it has made the decision to “refocus on its core business activities” as it battles off administration.

Scilly Ferries previously stated the commencement of the service was delayed due to ongoing evaluations within its parent company, Harland and Wolff.
