One of Cornwall’s most renowned Christmas displays went live on Monday as Mousehole’s Harbour Lights were switched on.

The seaside village’s festive lights have been wowing visitors since 1963 and this year features some new pieces on display which will be lit up daily from 5pm-10pm until January 6.

On Tuesday, December 19 many of the lights will be switched-off from 8pm until the following day in remembrance of the Penlee lifeboat disaster in 1981.

Mousehole Male Voice Choir performed on the evening of the lights switch-on, enhancing the festive spirit around the town.

To make that visitor experience that bit more special, a host of local musicians will be taking to the stage on ‘The Bank’ each evening until Thursday, December 21.

Rock Choir Cornwall will be providing the sound on December 14 and 20 at 5.30pm & 7.30pm, as well as on Saturday 17th at 4.45pm. Cait & Dylan are set to perform this evening and on the 16th, both at 6pm.

On Friday, Paul Church Choir take centre stage at 6pm, while Pip Wright & Singers will be supplying some Cornish carols on December 18 at 6.30pm. The line-up of musical performances will be rounded-off by Penzance Ladies Choir at 6.30pm on December 21.

There was plenty of festive fun in Marazion on Friday as the town switched-on their Christmas lights too.

In the market square, a blessing of the Christmas tree took place as the town echoed to the sound of carol singing once the lights were illuminated. There were plenty of live music on offer during the evening, which was provided by Breage Brass Band, Apollo Male Voice Choir and Marazion School Choir.

Locally grown Christmas Trees from Crowlas Trees were sold from outside The Kings Arms and The Cutty Sark served up a hog roast and mulled wine. Shops were open until late and the Marazion Grand Christmas Fayre took pace at All Saints Church throughout the day and on Saturday too.

This year’s fayre contained over 40 stalls selling local arts and crafts, jewellery, vintage toys, artisan gin and rum as well as other local produce. All proceeds raised by stall holder will be donated to St Julia’s Hospice and Children Hospice South West.

On Monday, Marazion Methodist and All Saints Marazion joined forces to hold a community carol service.

As well as Mousehole and Marazion, the village of Gulval also illuminated their festive lights on Monday.

This year’s lights were switched-on at the Old Chapel by councillor Bonnie Jackson. With the help of Penzance Town Band, carols were sung at the chapel and then at Alms Houses who were raising money for Cornwall Blood Bikes.
