MOMENTUM is gathering for one of St Ives’ most popular events for locals and visitors.

The St Ives Biathlon, which is organised each year by St Ives Surf Life Saving Club, to raise the charity’s profile and generate vital funds, will take place on Saturday, June 28.

Online registration is now open, and will be headline sponsored by Cornish Riviera Holidays, as well as a growing number of supporting sponsors.

The club, which is aiming to welcome a record number of participants this year, has welcomed 30 business sponsors, some of which have sponsored the event year-on-year.

There will also be a number of new partnerships for 2025 with funding and donations of services, which enables the event to take place.

Chris Simpson, the chair of St Ives Surf Life Saving Club and Biathlon lead, said: “Our club is extremely grateful to everyone that gets involved in helping to organise the Biathlon each year. From our committee and volunteers, to the wide range of other organisations and businesses that support us with assistance and gifts in kind.

“This helps us to keep costs down as much as possible, but there are still expenses for the event which we have to meet and the businesses that sponsor the biathlon are vital to enable us to do this.

“With posters, flyers, banners, t-shirts and other promotional materials going into design in the next week or so, now is the time for any business that has been thinking about getting involved to contact us so we can include their logo.

“Anyone that would like to find out more should contact us urgently.”

This year celebrates the 27th anniversary of the St Ives Biathlon and the 67th anniversary of St Ives Surf Life Saving Club.

The event will also include a new super vets category due to its popularity with locals and visitors alike.

The biathlon’s legacy dates back to a swim in St Ives harbour known as “The Sloop Slog”.

Organisers are delighted that The Sloop will support the biathlon again this year, with a free pint for every adult that finishes, alongside a free pasty for all participants thanks to The Cornish Bakehouse, which continues its many years of support and the “pasty and pint” tradition.

Mr Simpson added: “The event would not be possible without this amazing support from over 30 businesses that have been involved for many years, joined by new ones each year. We cannot thank them enough.”

The St Ives Biathlon’s open race is for people aged between 17 and 39, vet race for ages from 40 to 49, super vet race for 50 to 59 years and senior vet race for 60 plus years.

The event sees participants run from the slipway, to Carbis Bay Beach and swimming back to the start. There is also the option for team entries with one person running and one swimming following the same route.

A novice race also sees participants running from the slipway to the far end of Porthminster Beach and swim back to the start line; and the junior race for 12 to 16 year-olds which sees younger participants follow the same route.

There is additionally the option for juniors to enter as a team with one person running and one swimming following the same route.

Online pre-entries are open until approximately two weeks before the event, guaranteeing a commemorative event t-shirt.

Competitors can also register to enter from 3pm until 5.30pm on the day at the harbour slipway.
