MEMBERS of the Girls Brigade have taken part in the bicentenary celebrations of one of the oldest chapels in Cornwall.

Leek Seed Methodist Church at St Blazey Gate has held a number of events to mark its 200th anniversary.

A 1st Leek Seed Girls Brigade spokeswoman said: “The hard-working and artistic members of the company have been among those celebrating the bicentenary.

“During a recent evening, members retold the story of how Leek Seed’s founder, William ‘Gardener’ Stephens, scared away thieves who were threatening to steal money saved for the building by pretending a pile of leek seeds was gunpowder.

“Girls Brigade members also presented an impressive anniversary banner they had made as a gift for the historic occasion, this later to be hung in the chapel itself.”

Team leader Katie Hewitt added: “Lots of fun and laughter was had on this wonderful occasion with a special celebration tea and time for fellowship that was enjoyed by all.

“The brigade also took part in welcoming the Methodist president and national brigade chaplain, the Rev Gill Newton, when she visited Leek Seed, taking a memorable short service.

“It was great to reflect over the years and celebrate many wonderful times and memories.”
