FLOOD water has caused tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage in Mawgan Porth on Monday (March 25) night.
The River Menalhyl flooded following the heavy rainfall at about 10.30pm, which resulted in parts of the village being submerged by up to four feet of floodwater.
A number of businesses were impacted including Cornish Fresh, Betty’s News, King Surf Surf School and the car park.
Mawgan Porth Village Hall suffered also damage as the floodwater caused the flooring to pop off its joists.
Cars became submerged in the rising floodwater and some residents had difficulty getting into their properties.
The floodwater had receded by the morning and most businesses were able to reopen but Cornish Fresh was closed due to the damage caused.
Nick Bennett from The Merrymoor Inn pub by the beach surveyed the damage and described it as an “absolute catastrophe.”
Nick, who recorded the video of the flooding, said: “The flooding has been caused by the heavy rain and it’s come down the River Menalhyl into Mawgan Porth.
“The rainwater has collected from St Columb and flooded down.
“Cornish Fresh has not been able to open as it has been badly flooded in there.
“Mike Farmer who cleans the beach and has the golf course has four feet of water in his Nissen Hut, which is the lowest part.
“The Merrymoor has not suffered any flooding whatsoever as it is quite high up.
“King Surf has been flooded and one of the worst businesses affected is Cornish Fresh.
“The village hall is full of water and the flooring has been damaged.
“There was floodwater up to the first rubber of car windscreens, so it was pretty deep.
“I just hope everyone recovers as soon as possible as Easter is around the corner.
“Businesses need to start trading as it’s been a long winter.
“I saw flooding in Mawgan Porth previously in about the year 2000 when the river flooded.
“I would say tens of thousands of damage has been caused this time around.”
The community rallied round to carry out a clean up operation in the morning.
Peter Abell from King Surf said: “I managed to get Stan the van out of the car park with minutes to spare.
“The surf school was extremely lucky and no real damage has been doneBut we are saddened to see our neighbouring businesses lose lots of stock that was ready for the Easter holidays and the village hall has suffered water damage
“The community is pulling together to help clean up.”
There was also flooding in in the road in Porth near the Newquay Bay Resort but the floodwater had receded by the morning.
