More reaction to plans for a £58m revamp of St Austell town centre has been coming in.

And we'll have some of your suggestions for how the town could be improved online first thing tomorrow (February 18).

Tamsin Louise Hooper said: “If the rental wasn't so high on the small shops small independent businesses could last longer and build the town up, but they are so high for a dying town. It’s wrong.

“It would be lovely if a few bigger chains could join but it’s unlikely with how the town is now. It’s such a shame. It used to be a busy town with lots of small independent shops back-along.

“The trouble also is a lot with the nature of people hanging around the town. It’s not nice. Maybe they need to rethink the security of the town and get people to move on those who are dealing in the street and screaming and shouting at each other and people wouldn’t feel as intimidated about going into St Austell.

“I hope something can be done to help the town.”

Ian Brock said: “What a waste of money, lot of empty ‘new’ shops in Aylmer Square.”

Stephen White said: “Half of Fore St is now empty and you still cannot buy any men’s trousers.”

And Julian Burley criticised: “Another meaningless thing for the town.”

Francis Barron said: “St Awful – the town with no shops. All these so-called proposals won’t change a thing… last time knocked down better buildings and replaced it with rubbish, made it too expensive for shops to stay there.”

Steve Mitchell said: “However much money you chuck at it, the local economy has plummeted.

“Making St Austell pretty won’t put extra wages in people’s pockets.

“The China clay industry is a shadow of its former self and nothing substantial has risen to take its place.

“£58million will just make a few very much richer and the rest of us no better off.

“Invest in real jobs not retail.”
