A MAJOR search was sparked between Whipsiderry and Watergate after a personal belonging was discovered on Wednesday night (March 5).

The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924, Newquay RNLI Lifeboats as well as members of Newquay and Padstow Coastguard search and rescue teams attended the incident shortly before 6pm.

The search was stood down several hours later “pending further developments.”

A spokesperson for Newquay Coastguard said: “We were tasked by Devon and Cornwall Police to search an area in between Whipsiderry and Watergate.

“Newquay RNLI Lifeboats, HM Coastguard Padstow and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924 were also brought in to assist with the search.

“After several hours the search was stood down pending further developments.

“We would like to thank all agencies for their assistance.

“Anyone who sees something suspicious along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”

A police spokesperson said: “It was a report of a personal item located near Watergate.

“Police didn’t attend and passed the matter to the Coastguard.”
