PUTTING on their annual Christmas Social Evening on Thursday, December 5, the efforts of Madron History Group members and supporters were very much rewarded at a packed event held in Landithy Hall.
A meal, prepared and served by Nicola Osborne and her helpers was much enjoyed, and was followed then by the singing of three popular hippy era associated songs by the local ‘KanGwerin’ trio, comprising of Phil Davies, Anna Slater and Phil Westren.
Audience responses at chorus time added to the atmosphere, as was the case when the highlight of the evening, a play called ‘Travellers to Trewiddly’, written by Anna Slater, was performed by an enthusiastic and able group of amateur players, who were clearly determined to make it a fun occasion.
Event producer and narrator, Phil Westren, said: “On a personal note, I would like to thank all who contributed once again to our annual event. In a variety of ways, it involves a lot of hard work and commitment, but it is worth it.
“With reference to the play, it took us back to the 1960s, when hippy power was in vogue. The arrival of some American hippies to Madron was acted out, and the comical scenes were fictitiously set both in Trewiddly Manor House and at the playing field, which all culminated in Lord P and Lady P’s daughter, Tara Trewiddly, falling in love with Cosmo, who was one of the hippies.
“Several songs were sung, including by Aurora (Anna Slater) and Arthur (Leo Rudman), and by the whole cast. Then, after the final number – suitably ‘All You Need Is Love’ – the evening concluded with ‘One & All’ singing chosen seasonal carols.”
The cast of the play comprised of:
- Lord P (Peregrine - Phil Davies), Lady P (Priscilla – Kate Jasper), Tara (daughter – Bridgit England), Pennyworth (Butler – Peter Scrase), Cyril Hawkins (The Vicar – John Knibb), Police Sergeant Letsbe (Stuart Meyers), Policeman Billy Avenue (Jude Beckerleg).
- Hippies: Cosmic Cosmo (Cosmo Thelwall), Buzz (Graham Perry), Petula (Anni Keene), Aurora (Anna Slater), and Arthur (Leo Rudman).
- Torr Macfarlane played a drum, Phil Westren was again the Narrator, Sally Westren worked the Curtains, and Philip Eldin-Taylor controlled the Sound and Lighting (with thanks also to Mike Uren).
