The longstanding chairman of a parish council near Newquay has quit following a clash with the local village hall committee.
Alan Percy, who was the chairman of Cubert Parish Council for 18 years, says he has resigned after becoming upset with the way Cubert Village Hall was being run.
In a linked development, Cubert Short Mat Bowling Club, which has played at the village hall for the past 30 years, has severed its official association with the hall and folded. Mr Percy was secretary of this club.
Mr Percy said: “I stood down as chairman of the parish council over the way the village hall was being run.
“They want to change the constitution of the committee and would not allow the public to go to their meetings or see their accounts or minutes of their meetings.”
A report in the Cubert Parish News said: “Cllr Alan Percy announced that he is standing down as chairman of the parish council as he does not feel he can continue in position when access to the village hall accounts and minutes are being denied, and when he has concerns over the way the village hall is being managed.”
The bowling club was concerned over matters relating to its hiring of the hall.
The Cubert Parish News recorded that at “an extraordinary meeting, the club resolved to disband after 30 years of using and supporting the village hall”.
The bowls equipment was sold to a person who was hoping to continue using it at the hall.
The hall committee has since spent time discussing the issues at a meeting.
A spokesperson for the committee, referring to Mr Percy and also the bowling club, told the Newquay Voice: “Members of the Cubert Village Hall committee are unsure as to why one person’s opinion within a parish would warrant such press interest.
“The committee can confirm that bookings for use of the hall continue as normal.
“Short mat bowls still takes place at the hall with an increased interest in playing which includes members of the club referred to as having disbanded and left the village hall.
“The Cubert Village Hall committee has closed this issue.”
