THIS autumn, the Basset Community Hub ‘Town Deal’ project will begin with clearance of the site and the temporary move of the existing occupiers, Camborne Library and Camborne Town Council’s Engagement Team, until the completion of the project in 2026.

Camborne Town Council considered a variety of options for the library service including potential moves to a range of town centre locations, but these were unsuitable, so the library service will be temporarily moving back to the Passmore Edwards Building at the Cross in the centre of Camborne.

Whilst there will be less space for events and activities than there has been at the Basset Centre, the library service are committed to more outreach work during this period, to maintain the quality of the service that they have to date.

Back in 1895, John Passmore Edwards intended his building to be the permanent home for Camborne Library, but the services and activities that a modern library now provides have significantly outgrown the space of the building and so the Basset Community Hub will represent a huge upgrade and offer much more in the way of space, services and events that the community have said they needed during public consultations since 2021.

On completion of the Basset Community Hub project in 2026, the library service will be moving back into the newly refurbished modernised heritage asset that is purpose-built and accessible, which will offer considerably more space for activities and events, enabling the library to serve more customers and engage more of the community.

There will also be a wide range of supporting facilities and services including a cafe, Camborne’s first ‘changing space toilet’, dedicated outdoor and events spaces, heritage displays and a pleasant, modern, light environment.

To make space for the library, the council’s central service teams are vacating the Passmore Edwards Building and will temporarily move to a small office space in the town centre. The project is funded by Camborne Town Deal, a central government fund for capital projects.
