The Eden Project announced today that legendary rock band The Who will play the Eden Sessions this summer.
In what is a massive coup for the home of the world-famous biomes, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and band will take to the stage with a full orchestra on July 25.
Since emerging in the mid-1960s as a new and incendiary force in rock n' roll, The Who have played more than 2,000 gigs and established themselves as one of the top three greatest rock legacies in music history.
They have appeared at Woodstock, Monterey Pop, Glastonbury (twice), Hyde Park (four times), The Isle of Wight (three times), the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, Desert Trip, Shea Stadium, The Superbowl half-time show and Live Aid - to name but a very few.
Rita Broe, managing director of Eden Sessions Ltd, said: “We’re so thrilled to welcome legends The Who to Eden, in what will be a momentous moment in the Sessions history – and a great occasion for Cornwall. To see them grace our stage with a live orchestra will be one of the highlights of the summer: creating lasting memories."
The session will feature The Who’s full live band comprising guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend, keyboardist Loren Gold, second keyboardist Emily Marshall, bassist Jon Button, drummer Zak Starkey and backing vocals by Billy Nicholls, along with orchestra conductor Keith Levenson, lead violinist Katie Jacoby and lead cellist Audrey Snyder.
The Who wound up their Who Hits Back tour of the USA in November last year having wowed audiences in more than 30 cities.
Media and fans agreed that the band were as good as, if not better than ever and that the orchestral arrangements, most of which were done by the legendary David Campbell, brought a new depth and excitement to Pete Townshend’s music.
The band debuted in 1964 with a trio of anthems: I Can’t Explain, The Kids Are Alright and My Generation.
Since then, they have delivered to the world hits such as Baba O’Riley, Won’t Get Fooled Again, Pinball Wizard, Who Are You, and You Better You Bet.
Inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, the band has placed 27 top 40 singles in the United States and United Kingdom and 17 top 10 albums, including the 1969 groundbreaking rock opera Tommy, 1971's pummelling Live At Leeds, 1973's Quadrophenia and 1978's Who Are You.
Already due to play this year’s Eden Sessions are global superstar Lionel Richie (June 7), viral rock sensation Yungblud (June 10), top USA rockers The War on Drugs (June 18), American singer-songwriter Jack Johnson (June 23), Southern Californian, Grammy-nominated Incubus (June 24), the iconic Pet Shop Boys (June 28), the awesome Kasabian (July 1), and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Anne-Marie (July 7).
