St Austell and District Soroptimist Club held its annual Unsung Heroine Award Ceremony at Carlyon Bay Golf Club on Sunday evening.
The event is held to recognise International Women’s Day on March 8 and to celebrate the work of women and girls in local communities.
The Kana Kres Quartet, who are members of Cornwall Youth Choir, entertained 75 guests before the two winners were announced.
The Young Unsung Heroine was named as Keira Georgiou, 16, who for the last seven years has spent several hours each day caring for two of her younger siblings.
Her support worker, Sarah White, said: “Keira is quiet and unassuming, a guardian who watches what needs doing and gets on with it.”
The overall winner of the Unsung Heroine Award was Samantha Smith, student experience manager at Cornwall College in St Austell, who goes beyond her working hours to support students. Recognising the huge impact these young women play in the lives of those around them is such an important part of the club’s year,” said Jill Barnard, president of St Austell and District Soroptimists.
“What better time to do this than in celebration of International Women’s Day?”
