THERE will be plenty for the Redruth community to get their teeth into as the town hosts it’s International Mining & Pasty Festival on September 20 to 21.

Last year’s festival was blessed with perfect weather for people to enjoy the various activities on offer and this year’s event promises to offer more of the same.

The festival starts with Miners’ Day on the Friday where past and present miners are remembered.

Helping to provide an evening of storytelling and song are Cobweb Tours members and the Redruth Festival Band who will meet at the Miner statue in Redruth town centre from 4pm.

The evening will culminate at Wheal Uny at around 6pm when the two chimney stacks of the old engine houses will be brought to life with smoke rising in honour of the Miners in Cornwall and abroad.

All timings are approximate and depend on numbers on the day. The event is also weather dependent.

On Saturday, the action moves into the town centre with street stalls, a full day of musical entertainment and pasty making competitions. Last year saw the first running of the Pasty Relay Championships where the Redruth Youth Council were crowned winners.

The town will be busy throughout the day with additional attractions including the town market and children’s entertainment.

The conclusion to the weekend of remembering Redruth’s mining heritage culminates with The Mining Pilgrimage Service, taking place between 10am to 12pm on Sunday, September 22.

The service begins at at the Wheal Basset Stamp House, heads to Wheal Euny Engine house and after which moves to St Euny church for the formal service.

This will be a deeply moving service which remembers all those who died and suffered as part of the industrial revolution in Redruth. During the walk poems are read and songs are sung.

Members of the public who don’t want to take part in the walk are encouraged to head directly to St Euny for the 11.30am service start time.

After the service, pasties and refreshments will be served within the church, attendees to the service will include members of the town council among others.
