CITY MP Cherilyn Mackrory says she has plenty more to do for Truro but adds: “If people don’t think I’m doing a good enough job, then that’s fine, I’m out - and that’s democracy”.
The latest YouGov poll suggests the Conservative MP, whose constituency also covers Falmouth, will only gain 27 per cent of the vote and lose her seat to Labour candidate Jayne Kirkham.
“Polls are taken all the time, but the only poll that really counts is General Election day,” said Mrs Mackrory. “I’ve been working really hard and done an awful lot for this part of the world. I love it, it’s where I live.
“My husband is a fisherman, I’m trying to improve fishing. I’ve got friends who are farmers, I’m trying to improve farming. I’ve got a child at school so I’m trying to make school outcomes as good as they can be.
“If people look beyond that and aren’t happy with the national stuff, this is democracy, it’s absolutely fine. However, I know I will continue to work really hard … I plan on fighting really hard to keep my seat.”
Asked whether national affairs, like Partygate and the rapid turnover of prime ministers, might have affected her standing as a local Conservative MP, she replied: “I keep my head down and just try to do my job. There are things you can do as a constituency MP and there are things that are out of your control.”
She added that the polls didn’t take into account undecided voters: “When I talk to people on the street, there are a huge amount who haven’t made up their minds how they’ll vote yet.”
On the subject of social media abuse, she said: “If you want real people to do this job, you’ve got to allow us to make mistakes occasionally. We should be able to have debates, conversation and nuance.”
