HUNDREDS of people lined the streets to cheer on Newquay AFC during its open-top bus celebration tour of the town on Saturday.
The team’s five nil victory over Wendron United at the Mount Wise Stadium on Thursday clinched the Peppermints promotion from the SWPL Premier West to the Western League, which was watched by a record 1,864 crowd.

Newquay AFC’s open-top bus parade kicked off in style at Chester Road with fans cheering, motorists beeping their horns and town crier Simon Anderson Jones announcing their historic milestone.

Mr Anderson Jones said: “Newquay AFC’s promotion is fantastic for the town.
“Success breeds success and when you get a successful club it brings a lot of people together.”
Fan Mark Dyer added: “What Newquay AFC has achieved is great for the town.
“Attendances will be higher, which is not only great for the club it will also benefit the shops.”

Fan Paul Farrell said: “I think Newquay AFC’s success is brilliant.
“Cornwall is going from being a rugby county to a football county. When I first moved down here there were no successful football teams here and now, we have Newquay and Truro doing so well.”

The Newquay AFC squad made their way around local bars following the parade where fans were able to raise a glass, grab a selfie, and celebrate with the players.
Manager Shaun Middleton said: “This is a historic day for the club.
“The number of people that have come out shows what it means to the town and the community. We got there in the end.
“I would like to thank everyone who have been involved with Newquay AFC and everyone who has supported us. This is just the start of the journey.”
