More than 350 people took advantage of the free taster activities on offer during Helston Sports Centre’s recent open weekend.

Swimming sessions and lessons were available in the pool, workouts in the gym and fitness classes in the studio. The local RNLI team also attended on the Saturday morning to provide water safety advice.

Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the social enterprise that runs the centre on behalf of Cornwall Council.

“We were blown away by the volume of local support,” said Amelia Kitchen, GLL senior general manager.

“The aim was to let adults and children experience the fun and health benefits of being active this summer and, judging by the feedback, everyone enjoyed themselves. A big thank you to all those who came along.”

Amongst those in attendance was Neil Tunstall, one of thirteen locally based athletes to receive funding from the GLL Sport Foundation, and local councillors Mike Thomas, Loveday Jenkin and Nicola Boase.

Mike Thomas, Independent Cornwall Councillor for Helston North, has been a regular member of Helston Sports Centre since 2017 – using the gym and pool several times a week.

He said: “Whether you want to lose weight, or just feel fitter, our town’s sports centre is a safe place with very helpful staff who will advise on what equipment to use and how to achieve your fitness goal.”

Loveday Jenkin, Cornwall Councillor for Crowan, Sithney and Wendron, said: “It was great to see the centre so well used and to hear about GLL’s exciting plans for the future. I am pleased that residents from my division have access to such a friendly and supportive facility.”

Facilities at Helston Sports Centre include a state of the art 42-station gym, a 25 metre, six lane swimming pool and two purpose-built fitness studios.
