Surfers were given a surprise when they were joined by a Humpback whale in the line up at Fistral Beach in Newquay on Sunday.

Mannu Puolimatka captured the video of the whale, thought to be a juvenile, as it cruised amongst a pack of surfers at South Fistral at about 4.30pm.

Surfer Richard Dodd said: “I had just surfed and returned to watch the waves when the Humpback whale came through.

“I had an incredible view of it.

“Mannu and I watched it coming in from the middle of Fistral towards the beach and a group of surfers.

“Then the whale headed almost to North Fistral where we lost sight of it only for it to appear very close to the rocks at South Fistral.

“The whale continued to head back out towards the west and we followed it all the way up towards the Lewinnick Lodge.

“The whale was potentially a juvenile.

“I have a friend who is a marine biologist and I’m awaiting her thoughts on how old she thinks it is.

“I’m not sure it was good to see the Humpback so close in land to be honest.”
