Newquay’s horticultural efforts have been rewarded.
Newquay in Bloom held its annual presentation evening at St Michael’s Church where a host of awards were handed out to the town, its residents and businesses.
Members displayed the town’s record 14th consecutive South West in Bloom award and a silver-gilt business award for Sue Gray and her daughter of Your Well-being Services.
Newquay in Bloom also presented the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards to 14 volunteer community groups.
Councillor Sarah Thomson gave a short presentation about the library garden that she is working on, which was one of the 14 It’s Your Neighbourhood entries.
Mayor Margaret North was on hand to present the Newquay in Bloom garden competition residential awards whilst BID (Business Improvement District) manager Mark Warren presented the Newquay in Bloom garden competition business awards.
Among the winners were Texaco Gannel who were awarded first place in the business entries, the Farmers Arms, first in the pub category, and the Secret Garden, first in the cafe section.
Residential winners included Andrew Rippin in the courtyard garden, hanging baskets and cottage garden categories, Hazel Burn in the wildlife section, Daniel Bevan in the new garden, Sabrina Lleshi in the vegetable garden and Andrew Champion in the allotments. Barbara Hannan from Newquay in Bloom said: “There are amazing gardens hidden away behind the scenes in Newquay, all of which are very different and unique.
“It was lovely to see Newquay Junior School coming to the event to pick up their award and it would be even more exciting to see more schools entering.
“Gardening ticks so many boxes on the school curriculum.
“Maybe next year we can encourage more schools to enter.”
