Work is continuing to be carried out to assess the damage at the Grampound with Creed Heritage Centre after a car hit the historic building on Christmas Eve.

The Grade ll-listed building, described by Historic England as being ‘probably early 18th century’, suffered significant damage in the crash involving a Mercedes convertible.

Insurers and engineers have inspected the site and a team worked on shoring up and weatherproofing the centre.

The Heritage Centre said in an update: “We were amazed when we first went in by the amount of walling that had been pushed inside but also by how very little damage has been done to the contents – some damage and a lot of dust but less than it could have been.”

Amazingly a cabinet of crockery close to where the car hit the building survived with not one piece broke, but a few other items were not so lucky and there are visible cracks in the plaster upstairs.

The centre are emptying the downstairs to allow work to be undertaken.

It is thought that it could take around four months for the repairs to be completed and for the site to be reopened to the public.
