A group that empowers young people through theatre has received Royal approval.
Young Generation Theatre in Falmouth has been commended with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service 2024 for championing inclusivity, building confidence and unlocking potential.
The accolade, which is equivalent to an MBE, recognises outstanding work by local volunteer groups to benefit their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and, following his accession, His Majesty The King emphasised his wish to continue the award.
Representatives from Young Theatre Cornwall will receive the crystal award and certificate from Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho over the next few months.
Two volunteers from each group will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace next year, along with other recipients of this year’s award.
The citation reads: “Young Generation Theatre, founded in 1982 has been a cornerstone for youth theatre in Falmouth, providing opportunities for young people aged 10 to 20 to develop their theatrical skills.
“Over the years, Young Generation has impacted around 1,300 young people, fostering confidence, collaboration, and a sense of achievement through musical theatre.
“Entirely managed by volunteers who contribute approximately 2,800 hours annually. Many volunteers have served for over 20 years, with some former participants returning to contribute as committee members and directors. This long-term commitment has been essential to the group's success.
“Young Generation is committed to accessibility and inclusivity, maintaining low costs to ensure that young people from all backgrounds can participate. Ticket prices for performances are also kept low to maximize community access.
“The positive impact of Young Generation on participants' social skills and wellbeing is consistently affirmed by parents. The company also takes pride in the professional success of its alumni, with former members going on to work with prestigious organisations like The Royal Shakespeare Company, The National Theatre, MTV, and the BBC.
“Young Generation’s open and vibrant culture, driven by the dedication of its volunteers, has created a special and enduring community asset.”
Naomi Morant, the vice chairperson of Young Generation, said: “We are absolutely over the moon to be recognised at this level for our volunteer efforts and contribution to our local community.
“Volunteers are the heart of Young Generation; we are run entirely by people who give their time and energy up for free.
“To receive this prestigious award is such an honour, I am so proud of my fellow volunteers for their dedication and commitment to making musical theatre accessible, inclusive and magical.”
2024 sees the largest number of awards made to voluntary groups or charities in Cornwall over the last 12 years.
Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho KCVO OBE, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall says: “I am delighted and proud to see six of Cornwall’s finest voluntary groups recognised with these awards.
“The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest accolade any voluntary group can receive, given to those local voluntary groups that are truly outstanding, and which break new ground at a local and sometimes national level.
“Cornwall’s voluntary sector delivers invaluable support to our communities, selflessly, compassionately and with huge energy, reaching out to everyone in need. These six winners reflect the tremendous range and reach of the sector and this national recognition is hugely well deserved.
“My congratulations and thanks to our six exceptional winners; I salute you all!”
