THE future of an award-winning Newquay charity that helps people in need is in jeopardy following the announcement its army of volunteers are due to step down.
Heartbroken Monique Collins, who runs DISC Newquay at the Sandy Lodge Hotel, states she will be leaving after Christmas along with colleagues due to “keyboard warriors” and “haters” reporting false accusations, which have “been proven to be wrong.”
She stated the last straw came after a person reported DISC to the Charity Commission in a bid to get its treasured King’s Award for Voluntary Service revoked.
Monique says it will be up to the trustees of DISC Newquay to decide the charity’s future but she believes it will be difficult as so far no one has stepped forward to take it on and because funding is so hard to get.
DISC Newquay has helped thousands of people in crisis over the years providing meals, clothes, Christmas presents, Christmas hampers, top ups for electric, tents, accommodation and various community programmes.
Monique, in a post on social media, said: “I can’t do this anymore sadly.
“I have run DISC for seven plus years and have absolutely poured my heart into this community.
“Mostly our town is very supportive however the last year has been incredibly hard with keyboard warriors and haters reporting false accusations which we have proven to be wrong.
“Trying to take our King’s Award for Voluntary Service and report us to the Charity Commission was my last straw and my volunteers feel the same way.
“However, that made my decision easier to just walk away. I am leaving and as I don’t just quit I will give it one last big Christmas with my beautiful army of volunteers who all know how the nasty three per cent of Newquay have been and made me feel. And those heroes are walking away with me.
“Will DISC survive is the big question. The trustees will call that decision after we have gone.
“So far no one wants to take this monster charity on, and funding is very hard to get sadly, and no one has offered lifesaving funds.
“Sandy Lodge wants its hotel back after we leave as well, and we are so grateful to them putting us up for as long as they did.
“We have loved helping the true community and we love them as much as they loved us.“For my DISC family of volunteers I will find other charities they can help together with me as we will always be a family and support our locals.
“I know who these horrible people are that unsuccessfully reported me. They should watch their own charity and position, is all I will say. As it can happen to them and destroy everything sadly.
“I want to make this Christmas the best we can and then I can finally relax.
“I would like people to help me make this Christmas one to remember.
“Sadly no one else stepped up besides my incredible team and now our time has come to say goodbye. I’m heartbroken.”
