A TEAM undertaking cetacean research along the Newquay coastline were amazed at the marine life they encountered on Sunday.

Experts from two universities, along with dolphin specialists, onboard Newquay Sea Safaris and fishing vessel ‘Atlantic Diver’ came across a Humpback whale five miles offshore and an inshore pod of Celtic bottlenose dolphins.

They also spotted harbour porpoise and grey seals as well as many species of seabirds.

Annabelle Lowe from Newquay Sea Safaris and Fishing said: “The passengers were incredibly excited to see all the amazing marine wildlife we have here off Newquay.

“Cornwall Wildlife Trust and the Celtic inshore Bottlenose dolphin consortium hold a photo identification database of them so we are hopeful they will be identified as individuals which helps us plot the health of the pod which also included one juvenile and one calf.

“All sightings were recorded for Sea Watch Foundation too. The dolphin expedition was completed with the guidance of wildlife safe accreditation. They were so lucky to record so many sightings.

“At the same time Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Seaquest Southwest were carrying out a survey with Newquay Marine Group from Towan Headland.

“Everyone had a great sightings day in glorious Newquay sunshine.”
