The newly appointed Food Security and Rural Affairs Minister has visited Cornwall for the first time.

Accompanied by senior members of Defra and representatives of the Marine Management Organisation, Daniel Zeichner met with the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation to better understand the vital role Cornwall’s fishing industry plays in the UK’s food supply chain.

The former shadow minister for Defra engaged in discussions with fishermen, boat owners, merchants, and chefs, focusing on the future of the industry and exploring ways to strengthen Cornwall’s role in the UK’s food security.

The day began with a tour of Newlyn fish market, followed by a full net to plate experience in Newlyn and an afternoon meeting with fishermen in Sennen to meet and learn from the diverse CFPO membership.

The Minister also took part in a focused discussion on the progress of the Cornish fishing strategy, solutions to the current and future marine spatial planning challenges and the importance of co-managing fisheries.

Commenting on the visit, Chris Ranford, CEO of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation, said: “We were pleased to host the Minister and have the chance to promote the importance of the Cornish fishing industry and its role in feeding people and supporting our coastal communities.

“He was very impressed with the results of our True Value of Seafood to Cornwall research and it’s reassuring to know our new government is prioritising fishing as part of the wider food security agenda. We’re hopeful this visit will lead to meaningful actions that support the long-term viability of our industry.”
