Plans have been submitted for a 310sqm fitness suite and gym extension at Truro Leisure Centre to cater for a larger number of users.

A planning statement said: “Whilst the site is able to provide a service to the community in its current context, this is becoming increasingly difficult, due to growing numbers, to be able to continue to provide a high service to users of this facility.”

An assessment for applicant GLL (Greenwich Leisure Ltd), which runs the site next to Truro College on behalf of Cornwall Council, shows that a number of car parking spaces are surplus to requirements due to the site location and access to public transport and other suitable modes of transport.

There are currently 61 spaces, which will be reduced to 44, meaning a loss of 17 parking spaces.

The statement added: “The new extension where located will be more visually prominent than before. It will be visible from the roundabout.

"With the proposed windows, there are potentially more views in and out which creates a more active street frontage.

“This also provides a natural surveillance and increases the security of the site and road. The increased views in the activity of the fitness suite could act as a natural ‘advertisement’ of the space and the leisure centre, potentially encouraging more users to participate.”

A decision will be made either by Cornwall Council’s planning department or by committee on a future date. For more details on the application, PA23/08873, see here
