Cornish musician Alexander Paul Burton is captivating listeners with his latest music releases from across the pond in Canada.

Born and raised in Falmouth and educated at Redruth School, Alexander, 34, draws deeply from his upbringing in Cornwall. His music evokes the rugged coastal beauty, the rolling hills and the quiet yet powerful energy that shaped his creative journey.

“I was always inspired by the dramatic coastlines, the village life and the slower pace of life that allowed me to really observe and feel the world around me," he says. "Cornwall shaped the way I see and create music, grounding my work in a sense of place, nostalgia, and natural beauty."

His lo-fi electronic music carries a distinct influence from his roots, blending modern sounds with the timeless essence of Cornwall’s windswept shores and historical charm for a peaceful and reflective experience. His Christmas music, meanwhile, brings warmth and connection to the holiday season.

Alexander’s early experiences left an indelible mark on his compositions. “We always had music equipment, instruments and other things lying around at home,” he says. “My step-father, David Halliwell, was a presenter for BBC Radio Cornwall, and my mother, Vicky, is also musical and always encouraged me to explore and try new things.

“I found my love for music through them and my two music teachers at school. My friends and I used to skive and sneak into the music rooms to practice – luckily, the teachers turned a blind eye!

“They were incredibly patient with me, although I don't think I was a very good student. Their taste and standards in music made me want to try to compose my own piano music when I picked it up.”

The earliest concert Alexander organised, aged 15, was at Perran-ar-Worthal Village Memorial Hall to raise money for the Seal Sanctuary. “It was really exciting, and ever since I’ve tried to organise fundraising events around my music and give back to the community.”

He moved to Canada six years ago, having enjoyed dual citizenship since birth through family connections. “I’d always wanted to do this, but just didn't pluck up the courage - it was a big move going to university in London, so the idea of relocating over 6,000km away was kind of scary!

“I come back twice a year, although it has been a bit harder since COVID. Cornwall is such an amazing place, especially when showing a Canadian - they don't always make it that far, and most don't know about the beaches, the weather and history of Cornwall. I’d especially like to take my partner to the Isles of Scilly.”

As an LGBTQ+ artist, Alexander continues to use his platform to promote inclusivity, authenticity and the power of community.

Having performed internationally, including in London’s Covent Garden, he has continued to build a presence in Toronto’s arts scene. He has more than 11,000 followers on Instagram, and his latest music is available now on major streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.
