THE new school building at the West Carclaze Garden Village development, near St Austell, is taking shape.

Offsite construction specialist Reds10 reported in the autumn that the first module had arrived for the Sky Academy and Eden Project Nursery.

The primary school building is being erected near the iconic china clay Sky Tip using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).

Reds10 creates modules at its factory in Driffield, East Yorkshire, which are then delivered to become part of the building.

A Reds10 spokesperson said: “Eighty-seven percent of the new two-storey school building will be manufactured in Driffield before being transported to West Carclaze to be assembled on site.

“This new school will accommodate 210 pupils and feature a 26-place nursery as part of the wider West Carclaze Garden Village development.

“The project, developed alongside Kernow Learning Trust, includes areas of nature, tree planting, a dedicated habitat study zone and a multi-use games area.

“Sustainability is at the heart of the Sky Academy and Eden Project Nursery as both are designed to achieve net-zero operation.

“Sustainable features are embedded throughout, with air source heat pumps providing heating to the building - and solar panels and windcatchers on the roof.”

Sense of Space Architects have worked with Reds10 to produce a design for the school building which will integrate with the wider West Carclaze Garden Village development.

The new school is being clad in local stone at the lower level with hard-wearing fibre cement panels and metal cladding above.

The building will be complemented by soft planting across the site, with areas of short and long grasses, native tree planting, and a dedicated habitat area for study.

The fenced multi-use games area, and a grass playing field, will be created beside the school.

Sky pupils presently based at the Eden Project will be moving to West Carclaze.
