Oddfellows Friendship Groups meetings during February both in Redruth and Truro enjoyed a duck race with a difference for there was not a river or pond in sight.

At the turn of a card, the quaintly named ducks steadily moved along a tabletop course to eventually cross the finish line. Race supporters chose their ducks, each with different odds, and at the completion of each set of races, the supporter with the highest score won a selection pack of biscuits.

Following light refreshments which included teas and coffees, chocolate biscuits, cakes and fruit, there was time for a welfare update which included hints on avoiding on-line and telephone scams, a reminder regarding dental and optical support grants available, access to the members advice line and legal support, a prize raffle with the proceeds going to support local charitable good causes, the free book club and distribution of take away puzzle sheets.

Looking ahead, March’s friendship groups meeting in Redruth and Truro will be welcoming guest speakers from the ‘Redruth Antiquarians’ for an illustrated talk entitled ‘A Kernow-copia of Cornish Placenames’ which takes a look at the history and meaning of some of Cornwall’s town and village names and to which all can be assured of a warm welcome.

Plymouth and Truro District Oddfellows is part of one of the UK’s oldest and friendly societies and always welcomes new members of all ages and genders. It aims to improve people’s lives through friendship and support.

As well as social events in Redruth, Truro, Plymouth and elsewhere, Oddfellows members can access a wide range of benefits, including care and welfare support and a travel club. There are also opportunities to volunteer and play a part in fundraising initiatives.
