NEWQUAY is set to get a new supermarket.

The Duchy of Cornwall has confirmed Tesco as the supermarket partner for its new Market Street development in Nansledan.

The construction of the whole of phase one, including the supermarket, is on course to start early next year.

Market Street is set to become the beating high street of Nansledan’s growing community and a vibrant new food, retail, office and leisure destination for Newquay and North Cornwall.

More than 810 homes have already been completed at Nansledan, from a total of around 4,000, and there are already some 40 businesses.

Alongside the supermarket, the first phase of Market Street will include a range of artisan independent shops, cafés, restaurants, offices, co-working space and a Market Hall. The Market Hall is designed to showcase Cornwall’s best street food vendors on the ground floor, in a modern communal dining setting, with flexible offices and creative studio spaces above.

The aim is to create a vibrant year-round destination for local residents, the wider catchment area and visitors to the North Cornwall coast, creating business and job opportunities for local people.

The 7,000 sq m (75,000 sq ft) phase one construction project is currently out to tender and will focus around a central public courtyard, providing space for outdoor dining and a rich calendar of community events, including potential farmers’ markets and fairs.

The new Tesco store is expected to create around 100 jobs and will cover a footprint of 2,283 sq m (24,500 sq ft). Work on the supermarket will start first, quickly followed by the Market Hall and the initial retail and café spaces. The first buildings are expected to be available for occupation from 2026.

Sam Kirkness, Nansledan development manager at the Duchy of Cornwall, said: “We’re delighted to have secured Tesco as part of Market Street’s exciting and diverse retail offer and are hugely encouraged by the number of direct approaches so far from local established businesses, independents and start-ups, all interested in becoming part of a modern-day high street and lifestyle destination for North Cornwall.”

Marcus Vinnicombe, property acquisitions and disposals director at Tesco, said: “We are excited to be working with the Duchy of Cornwall to deliver a new Tesco supermarket in Nansledan. This store will offer a range of food and non-food goods, such as clothing, as well as provide a Click+Collect service, and we anticipate it will create around 100 new jobs.”

Units in Market Street will range from start-up spaces of 23 sq m (250 sq ft) to larger units of up to 370 sq m (4,000 sq ft), built to the highest quality and sustainability standards, and will be offered under a range of lease terms. Enquiries can be made via the Nansledan website.
